Trimming nails safely

Inside every nail is the quick — the part with the blood supply and nerve. Cutting into it hurts and bleeds, and a pet who has had that happen once is much harder to trim the second time.

• Set the stop conservatively to begin with and take less than you think you need.
• On pale nails the quick shows as a pink line. On dark nails it does not, so work in thin slices and stop when a pale circle appears in the cut end.
• Two or three nails a session is fine. There is no rule that says it has to be done all at once.
• If you do cut too far, press firmly on the nail tip with clean cotton wool until the bleeding stops, and speak to your vet if it does not.
• If your pet will not sit for it at all, a vet nurse will do it and show you how.

Wipe the blade clean and dry after use. Keep out of reach of children.
