Trimming nails safely

Inside every nail is the quick — the part with the blood supply and nerve. Cutting into it hurts and bleeds, and a pet who has had that happen once is much harder to trim the second time.

• Take a small amount off at a time rather than one large cut.
• On pale nails the quick shows as a pink line. On dark nails it does not, so work in thin slices and stop when you see a pale circle appear in the cut end.
• If you are unsure, or your pet will not sit for it, a vet nurse will do it and show you how.
• If you do cut too far, press firmly on the nail tip with clean cotton wool until the bleeding stops, and speak to your vet if it does not.

Wipe the blades clean and dry after use. Keep out of reach of children.
